Are You Conscious?

Are You Conscious of Your Words, Thoughts and Actions?

Based on the Law of Cause and Effect, the effects or outcomes you receive are a result of the causes you make. Similarly, what you sow you will reap. When you are striving to achieve your goals, it’s important to be conscious of how you are going about creating the success you seek.

There are some people who, after completing one task toward a goal they are working on, gave up after the outcome wasn't what they expected. They say things like "I just can't do it" or "I guess it's not for me to have." If you are taking specific action every day to accomplish a goal and you feel that nothing is happening, it’s very possible that the thoughts you think and the words you speak are not in alignment with your actions.

I was watching one of the singing competition shows on Television recently. I heard a contestant say "I want to at least make it to the top 5." I thought to myself, wow, for whatever reason, this person has already decided that they are not going to win even though the purpose of the show is to select one winner of the competition. While the great vocal ability of this person seem to display one who could win, their words got them very close to where they said they wanted to be. Your success depends solely on you and the choices you make.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting you from where you are now to where you want to be. Being conscious of your words, thoughts and actions are extremely important factors towards your success.

"Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture." -- Norman Vincent Peale

Let's talk Solutions!

I spoke to someone recently who was complaining about a problem she was facing. This is someone I haven't talked to in quite a while. She talked for about a half hour when I realized, that she never mentioned any action she could or would take to overcome the problem.

I know we all need to vent at times however, I heard the same problem from her several times before. We are so conditioned to speak more about our problems and the negative side of things. At times we may find ourselves telling everyone we encounter about our current problems.

We must realize that the more we talk and think about any problems and obstacles we are facing, the more likely they will stay around. Here are 3 simple action steps to take to help you move in a more positive direction toward creating solutions to your problems.

  1. Create a vision of what your solution will look like. You can create a vision in many ways -- through drawing, cutting out pictures or writing it out. For example if you are having a problem with your co-worker, write out a positive conversation that you could have with them. Read it daily until the problem is solved.
  2. Create daily affirmations regarding your solution. For example, let’s say you have writers block and a magazine publisher is expecting an article from you in a few days.  Affirm that “the words for my article will come to me easily, effortlessly and right on time.” Say it as many times as you want to throughout your day.
  3. Surrender. The spiritual principle of surrender is not about giving up. It is the act of letting go; the acknowledgement of the power of spiritual activity.  Practicing surrender will help you to stop worrying, complaining and agonizing over problems or situations. Pray, chant, mediate....surrender to your faith to let go of any thoughts or obstacles you believe are stopping you from getting your solution.
While it is important to know and state what your problems are, it is more important to talk about and focus on the solutions.

You are bigger than any problem that you may be facing and the solutions to your problems are not as far away as you think. You have the potential to create the solutions to your problems.

"Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems." -- Brian Tracy"

Problem Talk creates problems - Solution Talk creates solutions." -- Steven de Shazer

How are You Making a New History?

I met a woman recently who started a conversation with me about history...African history specifically.  She mentioned that African Americans are not taught enough about or not interested enough in their history. I have always believed that it's important to know our history. However,  because I work to stay positive and focus on the power of now, I hardly think about history.

Growing up in school, most of the events I learned about in history were not necessarily positive.
Especially African American history.  In the process of being taught about just a handful of African Americans who made a positive difference, I learned a whole lot about the abuse and violent treatment of my ancestors. What I learned, made me feel angry and upset.  Regarding anger, the only thing I, and I'm sure many others, really learned about anger was that when it was expressed, it was a bad thing.

I have since learned that even if you are angry about something from the past or the present, you can learn how to express it in positive ways.

There are many African American leaders in history who used their anger to take action in positive ways and create a positive difference in the world. There may have been many events in history that were horrible however, it teaches us to learn from our mistakes and make better choices not to have them repeated.

Knowing your history is definitely important. Focus on history in a positive way! Let it inspire you, help you to grow and cause you to create a happy and successful life for yourself and others.

"Don't let your history interfere with your Destiny." -- Dr. Steve Maraboli

"Live out your imagination, not your history." -- Stephen Covey

"If, after all, men cannot always make history have a meaning, they can always act so that their own lives have one." -- Albert Camus

"Everyday create your history, every path you take you're leaving your legacy." -- Michael Jackson

What to Do in Life When You Feel Stuck?

Have you started working on your goals for the year? There are times when we just don't know what step to take next or we have fear about moving forward. It is not unusual to hit a wall, so to speak, at various points in our life. Being stuck happens to all of us from time to time. What we must realize is that when making any kind of change in our lives, we will be faced with obstacles.

I’ve felt stuck many times during my life. I’ve thought, how am I ever going to get through this! Fortunately, I’ve also learned that I shouldn’t be concerned about how something is going to happen, just trust that it will happen and keep moving forward toward my goal. So, whenever I find myself stuck in a certain situation, I take whatever action I can to get passed the feeling of being stuck, even if it's something small. I know that I have the potential in my life to get past any obstacle that comes my way. You have that same potential!

The key to getting unstuck is taking action. Do anything. It's that simple. Doing anything gets you going and helps to change your perspective. If you find out that what you're doing is not exactly the right thing to do, you can always change what you're doing. It’s possible that you may need a success coach to help you map out some specific action steps to take toward your goals. Please keep in mind that the key to getting unstuck is taking action. When you do one thing, it leads to another and another and all of a sudden you're not stuck anymore.
“Everyone gets stuck in the process of creating. It’s the great among us who religiously who practice getting unstuck.” Keith Yamashita
“Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong.” –Mandy Hale

Beyond the Comfort Zone

Are you living life the way that you want to? Do you wake up every morning excited and happy to start your day?  Or, do you force yourself to get up, tackle your daily routine and grin and bear it? I have definitely been there, done that. The number one thing that has helped me to change my attitude everyday is being aware of the potential I have inside to create the type of life I want for myself and my family.

Many of us say that we are sick and tired of the way our life is going.  However, how tired are we really? If you have been trying to accomplish something more for your life, and you’re not seeing results, you may have gotten accustomed to just complaining about it.  Although we may not like complaining or listening to the complaints of others, they are familiar and comfortable to us like an old habit.  Knowing that is wonderful, because we have the power inside to change our habits, the power to acquire skills and the power to choose our attitude, our happiness and our success!

Stop complaining about what hasn’t happened and what you want to happen or who is keeping you from making it happen. Get up, get moving and make it happen!  You can accomplish whatever it is you set out to do! You are capable of more than you realize! You must challenge yourself!

Challenging yourself a little everyday will help you to see the potential that exists within your life.
Several years ago, Jazz musician, Herbie Hancock mentioned on a television program, “… as soon as people latch on to something where people will say hey that’s really good, then they want to stay there because that’s security, that’s acceptance and they feel comfortable…they don’t want to move outside of their comfort zone, but the hip stuff is outside of the comfort zone.

The successful life of your dreams, the “hip stuff” is right outside of your comfort zone.  Now is the time to get rid of the complaints, Challenge yourself, live your potential and create the successful life you desire!

“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining.  You make progress by implementing ideas. – Shirley Chisholm

“It’s important to be able to step outside your comfort zone and be challenged with something you’re not familiar or accustomed to.  That challenge will allow you to see what you can do.” – J. R. Martinez

“You’ve got to go out on a limb sometimes because that is where the fruit is.” – Will Rogers

Goal Setting Activities, Part 1

dart target image, goal setting tips,
Do you find yourself wanting to do something different with your life or wishing you didn't have to work for someone else to make a living? Do you go to work every day to do something that you’re really not passionate about? For many of us, the answer is the same; yes. What do you think is stopping us from taking the leap to just do what it is we want to do?

There are many answers to that question. We all have responsibilities to take care of. However, one of my mentors, motivational speaker Les Brown says that some people have possibility blindness. They are not aware of the possibilities in life. Please realize that it is possible to have the successful life you desire.

One very small action step you can take right now is to stop saying “I can’t”. Do you have a desire to do something and you tell yourself or others that you can’t do it. Is that really the truth? Really think about it. What is the reason you can’t do it? Is it that you think it may be too hard to do? Is someone stopping you from doing it? Or is it that you really believe you can’t. I’ve learned that for most of us, it’s not about whether we can or can’t do something; it’s whether we will or will not do it. What stops a lot of us from accomplishing our dreams and goals in life is just an initial little notion that we can’t do it.

Get rid of the phrase "I can't". Practice saying "I can" more often. If you want to change your job, you can; if you want to start a business, you can; if you want to be a billionaire, you can; if you want to write a book you can; if you want to be a real estate agent, you can; you just have to start from where you are right now. It may take a little effort, however you will find yourself getting closer and closer to your goal.

Every single one of us has the potential inside to live the kind of life that we desire. We have to have faith, be positive, be open and consistently take action towards our goals and dreams. Don't let your fears and doubts hold you back. Take a good look at your life, decide what you want, and go for it!

Get Rid of Your Fears!

I recently reconnected with an old friend of mine.  I learned that she has just received a Doctorate Degree.  I am overjoyed and not at all surprised by her success.

I remembered my friend saying, during a conversation many years ago that she had a fear of success.  When I reminded her of that, she said that she was able to block out that thought about success.  She now believes that there is nothing one cannot do! How wonderful!

My friend wasn't the only one I had heard that statement from over the years. There are many people today who have that same fear.  Please don't let any fears you have block you from your goals and dreams.  There is definitely a way to get from where you are now to where you want to be.

Here are 5 sure fire ways to help you get rid of your fears and become the success you have the potential to be!

1. Become Aware of Your Potential.

You have the potential inside for great success.  How do you know that? Well, have you ever said to yourself that you wanted to do something you thought would be difficult to do and you ended up doing it anyway?  If you answered yes, it's because you already had the potential to do it. No matter how hard you thought it would be; No matter how much money you thought it would take; No matter who said you couldn't do it, you did it anyway! Because you already had the potential inside to do it! The awareness of your potential gets stronger as you accomplish one goal after another. That awareness will lead you to the success you desire.

2. Surrender

The spiritual principle of surrender is not about giving up.  It is the act of letting go; the acknowledgment of the power of spiritual activity.  Practicing surrender will help you to stop worrying, complaining and agonizing over problems or situations.  Let go of any thoughts or obstacles you believe are stopping you from accomplishing your goals.

3.  Trust

Trust is something we do naturally.  Trust in yourself and your ability to become successful.  You trust that your body will function the way its suppose to.  You trust that you will receive a paycheck from your job on payday.  Trust that the decisions you make are the right ones for you.  Through your faith, trust that you will be provided with everything you need.  Trust in yourself and your ability to become successful.

4. Move Beyond Your Fears

Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real. Basically, that means what we fear, is not real; it has not happened.  So, in essence, we really fear nothing.  When you fear something, not only are you focusing on what you don't want but you are fearful of something that may not ever happen. Now is the time to let go of any fears you have.

5. Persevere

Perseverance means persistent action in spite of fears of difficulties.  People who persevere become successful because they learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward regardless.  When something doesn't work, try again and again. Don't stop until it is done.
