How to Be Your Team’s Example

There are many people who try to convince others to do what they say or to believe what they believe. It's important for you to know that the real way to convince someone of something is to show them with your actions. Your actions really do speak louder than your words. When we think of some spiritual leaders of the world, we may choose to believe or follow what they have said, however I believe we are much more in awe with how they lived their life.

What do you believe?

What do you stand for?

It's not what you say; it's how you live your life that speaks volumes.

As an entrepreneur, you may decide to find a mentor to help you achieve the successful life you desire. Would you rather have a mentor that tells you what you should do or a mentor who shows you with their own life how you can accomplish your goals. It would be in your best interest to find someone who is walking the talk instead of just talking the talk. I've heard parents say to their children "Do what I say, not what I do!"

Regardless of that request, most of the time, children end up doing what their parents do, instead of listening to what they say to do. If you find yourself complaining about the way someone else is living their life, instead of complaining, focus on you! Make sure that you are doing your best to be a good example. Don't talk about it, be about it!

Being a great example to others is one of the greatest gifts you can give them!

Be the example of your faith! Be the example of your values!

Be the example of what you would like to see in others. You can make a bigger impact on the lives of others when you lead by example.

Good leaders must lead by example. Through their actions, which are aligned with what they say, they become a person others want to follow. When leaders say one thing but do another, they erode trust, a critical element of productive leadership. Here are just 10 of the many of ways to lead by example:

  1. Take responsibility. Blame costs you your credibility, keeps team members on the defensive and ultimately sabotages real growth.
  2. Be truthful. Inaccurate representation affects everyone. Show that honesty really IS the best policy.
  3. Be courageous. Walk through fire (a crisis) first. Take calculated risks that demonstrate commitment to a larger purpose.
  4. Acknowledge failure. It makes it OK for your team to do the same and defines failure as part of the process of becoming extraordinary.
  5. Be persistent. Try, try again. Go over, under or around any hurdles to show that obstacles don’t define your company or team.
  6. Create solutions. Don’t dwell on problems; instead be the first to offer solutions and then ask your team for more.
  7. Listen. Ask questions. Seek to understand. You’ll receive valuable insights and set a tone that encourages healthy dialogue.
  8. Delegate liberally. Encourage an atmosphere in which people can focus on their core strengths.
  9. Take care of yourself. Exercise, don’t overwork, and take breaks. A balanced team, mentally and physically, is a successful team. Model it, encourage it, support it!
  10. Roll up your sleeves. Like Martin Luther King leading people to overcome injustice, you’ll inspire greatness in your company.
"Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means." -- Albert Einstein

"A good example is the best sermon." – Thomas Fuller

What to Expect Now for Optimal Successful Results

To experience the successful life you desire you must start within. You must create the energy of what you want within yourself before you can have it on the outside.

The law of positive expectancy states you achieve what you expect to achieve and what others expect you to achieve. When children expect that they are going to receive a special surprise or something they want, their whole attitude changes. They listen carefully and make sure to do what they are told. We are the same way...we get what we expect.

I’m sure you have no problems saying what it is you want in your life. We all fantasize in that way. However, in order for you to have what you want, you must get rid of any doubts you may have deep inside about having it. Regardless of what we say, we usually get what we expect.

Expect to be as successful as you want to be! You have the potential inside to make it happen! Hold your success attitude in your body. Stand up straight, raise your chin up, and keep your shoulders back. Feel the power of personal success in every cell in your body. Create a strong success image in your mind. Once you expect your success, see it. What are you doing? Where are you? What are you wearing? Make your success as real as possible in your mind, so your expectancy is even stronger and, as a result, your actions even bigger.

“Desire connects you with the thing desired and expectation draws it into your life.” ~ Bob Proctor

"The bumblebee's wings are so thin and its body so big, it should not be able to fly. The only problem is the bee doesn't know that." ~ David Lindsey

Goal Setting: What Do You HAVE To Do?

Are you spending most of your day doing what you want to do?
Or, what you have to do?

Wouldn’t it be nice to do what you want to do with the majority of your day?

Are you working in the career of your dreams?

Are you living where you want to live?

Do you spend most of your day around people you want to be around?

For many of us the answer to any or all of these questions is NO. We are not quite where we want to be, and doing what we want to do in life.

You may be familiar with the saying “Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.” This is a very nice quote. However, when I have said this to myself or someone else, it's usually because we are doing something we do not want to be doing.

The most important part of this quote is the “doing what you have to do” part.

Ask yourself: What do I “have” to do in order to “do what I want to do?”

Do you just put up with working a job you don’t really like? Or, living in a place you’re unhappy with? Do you settle with being around people who devalue you in some way?

Absolutely Not!

You are powerful beyond measure! You are valuable! You are a winner! You can accomplish whatever it is you set out to accomplish!

You have tremendous potential within to be as successful as you want to be! Here are 3 small action steps to take to insure that you will “have” what you want.
  1. Create a real list of the things you want. It’s important to first get your goals out of your head so you can see them, even if it’s first on paper.
  2. Write down and estimate when you would like to complete each item on your list. Doing this will help you to stay focused and on your intended result. A goal without a due date is a wishlist. The timeline is your gauge. If you don’t reach your goal is not reached in this time period, it’s to revise your approach or acknowledge if you have to learn more to reach your goal.
  3. Get Help and Support. Having an accountability partner, mentor or coach will help you to create a plan of action, stay on track and stay motivated.
These three steps will help you continue to move forward. Remember as long as you are going forward you will reach your destination.

Are You Conscious?

Are You Conscious of Your Words, Thoughts and Actions?

Based on the Law of Cause and Effect, the effects or outcomes you receive are a result of the causes you make. Similarly, what you sow you will reap. When you are striving to achieve your goals, it’s important to be conscious of how you are going about creating the success you seek.

There are some people who, after completing one task toward a goal they are working on, gave up after the outcome wasn't what they expected. They say things like "I just can't do it" or "I guess it's not for me to have." If you are taking specific action every day to accomplish a goal and you feel that nothing is happening, it’s very possible that the thoughts you think and the words you speak are not in alignment with your actions.

I was watching one of the singing competition shows on Television recently. I heard a contestant say "I want to at least make it to the top 5." I thought to myself, wow, for whatever reason, this person has already decided that they are not going to win even though the purpose of the show is to select one winner of the competition. While the great vocal ability of this person seem to display one who could win, their words got them very close to where they said they wanted to be. Your success depends solely on you and the choices you make.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting you from where you are now to where you want to be. Being conscious of your words, thoughts and actions are extremely important factors towards your success.

"Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture." -- Norman Vincent Peale

Awakening to Your Greatness

Are you aware of your greatness? Are you aware of your strength, your uniqueness and your power? Are you aware that you have the ability to turn any situation around today by making a few little changes? You have the potential inside to be as successful as you want to be!

Most of us talk about wanting our lives to be different or better than it is. What many of us may not realize is that we can have a different or better life if that is what we truly want. It's possible! Not being aware of the successful person you are inside, is like having a treasure buried in your backyard and not knowing it or benefiting from it.

There is an old Buddhist story called "The Gem in the Robe". In this story a poor man, wandered around for many, many years without realizing that his wealthy friend so many years ago, had sewed a beautiful gem in the hem of his robe while he was asleep. The moral of this story is that many of us walk around and are not aware of the gem we have within our life to succeed.

If Oprah Winfrey announced that she would give anyone $100,000 after they have written a book on how to help people succeed, would you write it? Are you aware that you could do it? Well, believe it! You have the potential within to do it! You have something special and unique to offer others.

Think of something you do really well or some information you have.  Know that there is someone, somewhere, right now, who wants or needs your information. Write out a simple plan, instructions or action steps that person will need to follow. This is how your successful life will start to unfold.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" -- Marianne Williamson

You are always a valuable, worthwhile human being – not because anybody says so, not because you're successful, not because you make a lot of money – but because you decide to believe it and for no other reason." -- Wayne Dyer

How to Activate the Power of Gratitude

I hope that you are working on your goals and dreams everyday. On your path, always remain grateful. The gratitude practice is a tool for happiness and its usefulness is knowledgeable to mainstream. Long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business. It also contributes to a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from health issues.

But while we may acknowledge gratitude’s benefits, it can be difficult to prolong. In general, we are trained to notice what is broken, undone or lacking in our lives. But, to reap gratitude’s full healing potential, we have to embody an appreciative mindset.

We have to create a new routine. That’s why practicing gratitude makes so much sense. When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.

Remember that gratitude isn’t a blindly optimistic approach in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It’s more a matter of where we put our focus and attention. Pain and injustice exist in this world, but when we focus on the gifts of life, we gain a feeling of well-being.
Gratitude balances us and gives us hope. There are many things to be grateful for:
  • colorful autumn leaves
  • legs that work
  • friends who listen and really hear
  • chocolate
  • fresh eggs
  • warm jackets
  • tomatoes
  • the ability to read
  • roses
  • our health
  • butterflies

What’s on Your Gratitude List?

Some Ways to Practice Gratitude

  • Keep a gratitude journal in which you list things you are thankful for in your life. You can make daily, weekly or monthly lists. Greater frequency may be better for creating a new habit, but just keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way.
  • Make a gratitude collage by drawing or pasting pictures
  • Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your nighttime routine
  • Make a game of finding the hidden blessing in a challenging situation. When you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list instead. You may be amazed by how much better you feel
Notice how gratitude is impacting your life. Write about it, sing about it, express thanks for gratitude. As you practice, an inner shift begins to occur, and you may be delighted to discover how content and hopeful you are feeling. That sense of fulfillment is gratitude at work.

Let's talk Solutions!

I spoke to someone recently who was complaining about a problem she was facing. This is someone I haven't talked to in quite a while. She talked for about a half hour when I realized, that she never mentioned any action she could or would take to overcome the problem.

I know we all need to vent at times however, I heard the same problem from her several times before. We are so conditioned to speak more about our problems and the negative side of things. At times we may find ourselves telling everyone we encounter about our current problems.

We must realize that the more we talk and think about any problems and obstacles we are facing, the more likely they will stay around. Here are 3 simple action steps to take to help you move in a more positive direction toward creating solutions to your problems.

  1. Create a vision of what your solution will look like. You can create a vision in many ways -- through drawing, cutting out pictures or writing it out. For example if you are having a problem with your co-worker, write out a positive conversation that you could have with them. Read it daily until the problem is solved.
  2. Create daily affirmations regarding your solution. For example, let’s say you have writers block and a magazine publisher is expecting an article from you in a few days.  Affirm that “the words for my article will come to me easily, effortlessly and right on time.” Say it as many times as you want to throughout your day.
  3. Surrender. The spiritual principle of surrender is not about giving up. It is the act of letting go; the acknowledgement of the power of spiritual activity.  Practicing surrender will help you to stop worrying, complaining and agonizing over problems or situations. Pray, chant, mediate....surrender to your faith to let go of any thoughts or obstacles you believe are stopping you from getting your solution.
While it is important to know and state what your problems are, it is more important to talk about and focus on the solutions.

You are bigger than any problem that you may be facing and the solutions to your problems are not as far away as you think. You have the potential to create the solutions to your problems.

"Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems." -- Brian Tracy"

Problem Talk creates problems - Solution Talk creates solutions." -- Steven de Shazer

Leap Believing in the Achievement of your Dreams

Every single one of us has the potential inside to live the kind of life that we desire. However, many of us go to work every day to do a job that we're really not interested in. There are many reasons why we find ourselves in that situation. We certainly have to make a living for ourselves and our families. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were getting up every morning to go to our dream job or our home office to run own successful business? Definitely! So, how can we go from where we are to where we want to be? It's time to create a fresh new plan of action for success!

If you want something different, you have to do something different. The potential is already there for you to succeed.  Keep that in mind.  Once you really realize that, have faith, be positive and consistently take action towards your dreams and goals. Anything is possible. It just depends on how much you want, whatever it is you want.

I read recently that someone bought a $3,000 ticket to a concert to see their favorite performer. That's wonderful!  I've never heard of a ticket for a concert costing that much! However, this tells you that we will find a way to do whatever it is we want to do, no matter what the cost.

Don't let your fears and doubts hold you back. Take a leap of faith! Ignore conventional approaches; Focus on the ends rather than the means; Trust in the power of pursuit! Take a good look at your life, decide what you want, and go for it!

"It always seems impossible until it is done." – Nelson Mandela

"Leap and grow your wings on the way down" -- Les Brown

"Take a leap of faith and begin this wondrous New Year by believing. Believe in yourself. And believe that there is a loving Source - a Sower of Dreams - just waiting to be asked to help you make your dreams come true." -- Sarah Ban Breathnach

Do the Work

My son asked me recently if I thought it was possible for him to fly. I said, “Well, people fly every day in airplanes. What type of flying are you talking about?” He said “I just want to take off and fly just as I am.  You always say that anything is possible, if I believe, right?" “Yes, however, you must understand the principles of flying.”  He replied, "Why do I have to understand anything? I thought I could just believe I can.”

I said "There are rules and laws you must following if you want to be safe; there are things you must understand first.”  He said "Awww, why can't I just jump and fly if anything is possible? I knew you were going to say that." My son has a lot to learn about his part in the creative process. We all do. Anything is possible if you believe. However, your belief has to be unwavering and you must take action by doing the work that will enable you to see your desired result.

I read a story recently about a woman who was named the first African American woman to hold a patent for a natural hair care product. What I found fascinating about the story was how she acquired her patent. When she realized that she couldn’t afford to hire a patent attorney, she didn’t let that stop her from her goal. She ended up going to the library and the patent and trademark office and taught herself patent law. In a little over a year, she received her patent! How wonderful!

She believed that she would get her patent and did the necessary work to make it so.   Have you ever been in a situation where you simply thought you couldn't do something you wanted to do?  I'm sure we all have. When you find yourself in that situation, you have two choices to make; Do nothing or Do the work necessary to achieve your goal.  Don't let anything stop you from your goals! Anything is possible if you believe.

How many times have you or someone you know let not having enough money, time or whatever stop you or them from moving forward with their goals? Please realize that whatever you want to accomplish, it can be done. All it takes is deciding how much you want it and if you are willing to do the work.

Remember, you have the potential inside for great success! Live Your Potential!

“You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.” – Zig Ziglar
