Goal Setting: What Do You HAVE To Do?

Are you spending most of your day doing what you want to do?
Or, what you have to do?

Wouldn’t it be nice to do what you want to do with the majority of your day?

Are you working in the career of your dreams?

Are you living where you want to live?

Do you spend most of your day around people you want to be around?

For many of us the answer to any or all of these questions is NO. We are not quite where we want to be, and doing what we want to do in life.

You may be familiar with the saying “Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.” This is a very nice quote. However, when I have said this to myself or someone else, it's usually because we are doing something we do not want to be doing.

The most important part of this quote is the “doing what you have to do” part.

Ask yourself: What do I “have” to do in order to “do what I want to do?”

Do you just put up with working a job you don’t really like? Or, living in a place you’re unhappy with? Do you settle with being around people who devalue you in some way?

Absolutely Not!

You are powerful beyond measure! You are valuable! You are a winner! You can accomplish whatever it is you set out to accomplish!

You have tremendous potential within to be as successful as you want to be! Here are 3 small action steps to take to insure that you will “have” what you want.
  1. Create a real list of the things you want. It’s important to first get your goals out of your head so you can see them, even if it’s first on paper.
  2. Write down and estimate when you would like to complete each item on your list. Doing this will help you to stay focused and on your intended result. A goal without a due date is a wishlist. The timeline is your gauge. If you don’t reach your goal is not reached in this time period, it’s to revise your approach or acknowledge if you have to learn more to reach your goal.
  3. Get Help and Support. Having an accountability partner, mentor or coach will help you to create a plan of action, stay on track and stay motivated.
These three steps will help you continue to move forward. Remember as long as you are going forward you will reach your destination.

Are You Conscious?

Are You Conscious of Your Words, Thoughts and Actions?

Based on the Law of Cause and Effect, the effects or outcomes you receive are a result of the causes you make. Similarly, what you sow you will reap. When you are striving to achieve your goals, it’s important to be conscious of how you are going about creating the success you seek.

There are some people who, after completing one task toward a goal they are working on, gave up after the outcome wasn't what they expected. They say things like "I just can't do it" or "I guess it's not for me to have." If you are taking specific action every day to accomplish a goal and you feel that nothing is happening, it’s very possible that the thoughts you think and the words you speak are not in alignment with your actions.

I was watching one of the singing competition shows on Television recently. I heard a contestant say "I want to at least make it to the top 5." I thought to myself, wow, for whatever reason, this person has already decided that they are not going to win even though the purpose of the show is to select one winner of the competition. While the great vocal ability of this person seem to display one who could win, their words got them very close to where they said they wanted to be. Your success depends solely on you and the choices you make.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting you from where you are now to where you want to be. Being conscious of your words, thoughts and actions are extremely important factors towards your success.

"Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture." -- Norman Vincent Peale

Awakening to Your Greatness

Are you aware of your greatness? Are you aware of your strength, your uniqueness and your power? Are you aware that you have the ability to turn any situation around today by making a few little changes? You have the potential inside to be as successful as you want to be!

Most of us talk about wanting our lives to be different or better than it is. What many of us may not realize is that we can have a different or better life if that is what we truly want. It's possible! Not being aware of the successful person you are inside, is like having a treasure buried in your backyard and not knowing it or benefiting from it.

There is an old Buddhist story called "The Gem in the Robe". In this story a poor man, wandered around for many, many years without realizing that his wealthy friend so many years ago, had sewed a beautiful gem in the hem of his robe while he was asleep. The moral of this story is that many of us walk around and are not aware of the gem we have within our life to succeed.

If Oprah Winfrey announced that she would give anyone $100,000 after they have written a book on how to help people succeed, would you write it? Are you aware that you could do it? Well, believe it! You have the potential within to do it! You have something special and unique to offer others.

Think of something you do really well or some information you have.  Know that there is someone, somewhere, right now, who wants or needs your information. Write out a simple plan, instructions or action steps that person will need to follow. This is how your successful life will start to unfold.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" -- Marianne Williamson

You are always a valuable, worthwhile human being – not because anybody says so, not because you're successful, not because you make a lot of money – but because you decide to believe it and for no other reason." -- Wayne Dyer

How to Activate the Power of Gratitude

I hope that you are working on your goals and dreams everyday. On your path, always remain grateful. The gratitude practice is a tool for happiness and its usefulness is knowledgeable to mainstream. Long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business. It also contributes to a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from health issues.

But while we may acknowledge gratitude’s benefits, it can be difficult to prolong. In general, we are trained to notice what is broken, undone or lacking in our lives. But, to reap gratitude’s full healing potential, we have to embody an appreciative mindset.

We have to create a new routine. That’s why practicing gratitude makes so much sense. When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.

Remember that gratitude isn’t a blindly optimistic approach in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It’s more a matter of where we put our focus and attention. Pain and injustice exist in this world, but when we focus on the gifts of life, we gain a feeling of well-being.
Gratitude balances us and gives us hope. There are many things to be grateful for:
  • colorful autumn leaves
  • legs that work
  • friends who listen and really hear
  • chocolate
  • fresh eggs
  • warm jackets
  • tomatoes
  • the ability to read
  • roses
  • our health
  • butterflies

What’s on Your Gratitude List?

Some Ways to Practice Gratitude

  • Keep a gratitude journal in which you list things you are thankful for in your life. You can make daily, weekly or monthly lists. Greater frequency may be better for creating a new habit, but just keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way.
  • Make a gratitude collage by drawing or pasting pictures
  • Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your nighttime routine
  • Make a game of finding the hidden blessing in a challenging situation. When you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list instead. You may be amazed by how much better you feel
Notice how gratitude is impacting your life. Write about it, sing about it, express thanks for gratitude. As you practice, an inner shift begins to occur, and you may be delighted to discover how content and hopeful you are feeling. That sense of fulfillment is gratitude at work.
